Report on the 7th Meeting of IEC/TC3 (Information structures, documentation and graphical symbols) / MT21 – Maintenance of IEC 62079

The 7th international meeting of IEC/TC 3/MT 21 convened from 30 August to 3 September 2010 at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Odaiba, Tokyo. During the past year, the activities of MT 21 were made into a joint IEC/ISO project at the IEC/TC 3 meeting held in October 2009. With this move, IEC 62079 for which MT 21 was responsible for amendment work was changed into a multipart standard. The standard thus became IEC 82079, with its documentation accordingly renamed IEC 82079-1 Ed. 1 and titled “Preparations of instructions for use – Part 1: General principles and detailed requirements”. The 2CD was published in December 2009, and the 3CD in May 2010.

The international meeting was attended by 1 member from the UK, 1 from Denmark, 2 from Germany, 1 from Finland and 7 from Japan.

Comments received for 3CD totaled 379, of which 70 came from ISO. Because the comments from ISO referred to 2CD, much time was consumed to cross-checking the article number and text to which these comments referred. By the end of the 5-day meeting, a third of the comments were left unreviewed.

Initially, the CDV was planned to be held on 15 August 2010, followed by the IS on 15 April 2011. Because it has become difficult to proceed as planned, it was decided that rescheduling will be proposed to the TC 3 secretary. Under the revised schedule, the remaining comments will be reviewed by 24 September and the draft CDV will be submitted to the TC 3 Secretary on 30 of the same month.
